FLASS makes waves: six students toasted at EdUHK President’s Commendation Ceremony
In the 2024/25 edition of the President’s Commendation Scheme, a total of six current and former students from FLASS were honoured with the President’s Commendation Award and the President’s Appreciation Award. EdUHK hosted a ceremony on 6 May to present these accolades to the recipients. The scheme recognises students for their outstanding achievements beyond academic studies, including contributions in the arts and culture, community service, leadership, sports, as well as innovation, science and technology.

In his welcoming statement, President Professor John Lee Chi-kin congratulated the award-winning students on their dedication, spirit of service, potential, and leadership. He stated, “You have shown that you are not just the leaders of tomorrow but the changemakers of today. These awards are both a recognition of your past achievements and a vote of confidence in your future potential. Wherever your dreams may take you, continue to shine in your chosen field and carry with you the values of integrity and innovation, contributing to society as we instil here at the University,"
The ceremony began with the presentation of the 2024/25 President’s Commendation Scheme awards. Among the seven awardees, three students, including two from FLASS, received the scheme’s highest honour, the President’s Commendation Award. These were Kok Yu-hang, a graduate of the Bachelor of Health Education (Hons) Programme (BHE) and now a first-year student in the Master of Education Programme, who was recognised for his work in Community Service; and Jaclyn Tsang Hei, a first-year student in the Doctor of Philosophy Programme, who was awarded for her achievements in Sports. Jaclyn is currently supervised by Dr Bob Sun Fenghua from the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE).
Yu-hang expressed his commitment to promoting inclusive sports education for individuals with special educational needs in the community, aiming to help children with special needs integrate into mainstream society. Jaclyn, a powerlifting athlete herself, explained that powerlifting requires athletes to lift the maximum weight in three events: the squat, bench press and deadlift. She is particularly passionate about overcoming challenges in bench pressing, a weight training exercise in which one lies on a bench and pushes a barbell or dumbbells upwards.
The President's Appreciation Award was conferred upon four students, all from FLASS. Cloof Siu Chun-ping, a fourth-year student in the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Secondary) (Information and Communication Technology) (BEd(S)-ICT) Programme offered by the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, received the award in the Innovation, Science and Technology category. The other three awardees were from HPE, recognised for their exceptional achievements in sports: Tommy Wong Haunting, a second-year student in the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Science and Coaching (BSc(SPSC)) Programme; and Mak Cheuk-wing and Ho Cheuk-kiu, respectively a second-year and first-year student in the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Physical Education) (BEd(PE)) Programme.
Additionally, five students were presented with the “Whole Person Development Awards – Dean of Students’ List” for 2024/25 at the event. Dean of Students Professor Bill Yeung Chi-ho also extended his warmest congratulations to the award recipients. “EdUHK is committed to nurturing a new generation equipped with professional knowledge and a passion for humanity,” he said. “The essence of education lies in helping students find their own path. We hope that every student here will discover their unique calling and shine in their respective fields, becoming a force for social progress.”
Joining President Professor John Lee to attend the ceremony were Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, Vice President (Administration) Dr Tom Fong Wing-ho, Associate Vice President (Internationalisation) Professor Lo Sing-kai, Associate Vice President (Research) Professor Ken Yung Kin-lam, Associate Vice President (Mainland Engagement and Development) and Director of Communications and Engagement Ms Helen Gai Huixia, as well as Professor Bill Yeung. Member of the Board of Stewards of the EdUHK Foundation Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak, and EdUHK Council student member Ms Gemma Cunanan Sitchon also attended the ceremony.
Since its inception in 2010, more than 150 students and groups have been recognised by the President’s Commendation Scheme, marking a significant milestone in EdUHK’s ongoing commitment to whole-person education.
